Level 2 PA1 – Safe Use of Pesticides

A one-day knowledge-based course covering legislation, label interpretation, risk assessment, and safe handling principles for professional pesticide use.

Description

Using pesticides responsibly starts with understanding the risk, the law, and your duty of care.

This one-day Level 2 PA1 course provides essential underpinning knowledge for anyone involved in the storage, handling, or professional use of pesticide products.

Course overview

Pesticides play an important role in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and grounds management. At the same time, they present clear risks to human health, wildlife, watercourses, and the wider environment if misused or poorly controlled.

The PA1 course focuses on the principles of safe pesticide use, rather than application technique. It develops a clear understanding of legislation, product labels, hazard classification, and risk control measures. Emphasis is placed on recognising how exposure occurs, how risks can be reduced, and how legal responsibilities apply in real working situations.

PA1 forms the foundation for all practical pesticide application qualifications. Successful completion is required before undertaking practical assessment units such as PA6.

Key benefits

  • Understand legal responsibilities relating to pesticide storage, handling, and use

  • Interpret product labels and safety data accurately

  • Recognise routes of exposure and apply effective control measures

  • Reduce the risk of harm to people and the environment

  • Meet the knowledge requirement for progression to practical units
