Remote Control Mower Operations (LANTRA Awards)

A one-day LANTRA Awards course covering safe operation, risk assessment, and machine control when using remote control mowers on steep or challenging terrain.

Description

LANTRA logoOperating a machine at a distance changes how risk is managed, not whether it exists. Safe use depends on situational awareness, machine control, and a clear understanding of terrain and response behaviour.

This one-day LANTRA Awards course provides practical, assessed training for operators who use remote control mowers in challenging environments.

Course overview

Remote control mowers are increasingly used to manage steep slopes, rough ground, and areas where conventional pedestrian or ride-on mowing would expose operators to unacceptable risk. While removing the operator from the machine reduces some hazards, it introduces others linked to machine response, line of sight, radio control systems, and ground conditions.

This course develops safe, competent remote control mower operation through a combination of safety awareness, risk assessment, and hands-on practical training. It focuses on understanding machine capability and limitations, maintaining effective control at a distance, planning safe working zones, and responding appropriately to changing terrain and operating conditions.

Training reflects current industry practice and includes formal assessment. Successful candidates receive a LANTRA Certificate of Competence.

Key benefits

  • Operate remote control mowers safely on steep or difficult terrain

  • Maintain effective machine control while operating at a distance

  • Plan work areas to manage risks to people, property, and infrastructure

  • Understand machine response characteristics and limitations

  • Reduce the risk of rollover, loss of control, or uncontrolled movement

  • Demonstrate assessed competence through recognised certification

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify hazards and risks associated with remote control mower operations

  • Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Identify machine components, controls, and safety systems

  • Assess terrain and ground conditions to determine safe operating limits

  • Maintain line of sight and situational awareness during operation

  • Operate remote control mowers safely on slopes and uneven ground

  • Plan and manage exclusion zones and safe working distances

  • Respond appropriately to loss of signal, machine faults, or changing conditions

  • Carry out pre-use checks and safe shutdown procedures

  • Apply safe transport and storage practices

Who should attend

This course is suitable for:

  • Grounds maintenance and landscaping operatives

  • Estate, highways, and land management staff

  • Operators required to manage vegetation on slopes or difficult access areas

  • Both novice operators and experienced users requiring formal certification

Course duration and content may vary depending on machine type, terrain, and instructor-to-learner ratios.
